A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE...
TOOK THE FIRST STEPS.
HOW DO WE MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR EVERYONE TO WALK AND BIKE SAFELY AND JOYFULLY?
This question started our journey in 2010 and led to multiple civic changes, a healthier city, and a full bicycle shop with over 10 workstations, hundreds of volunteers, and too many lives impacted to count.
We are forever grateful for every soul that made and makes this possible and this is how we got to where we are.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN 2010
THE RECYCLE SHOP | A TIMELINE
SPRING 2015
THE QUESTION WAS ASKED.
The question "What are we doing to help people who need their bikes for everyday transportation?" was asked during a Bike Walk Wichita board meeting.
Alan Kailer stepped forward and offered to begin emulating what he had seen done in Austin Tx with the Yellow Bike Project.

SUMMER 2015
ReCYCLE WAS BORN.
Bike Walk Wichita launches ReCycle, built on a simple ideal: bicycle transportation and repairs should not be limited or hindered for any person.
Operating out of the back of his van, Alan would drive to shelters and service providers and provide no-cost repairs to those who needed them.

SUMMER 2015
OPENING DOORS.
The first place he visited was Open Door, a homeless shelter located in Wichita, and asked them: "What do you need the most?"
The staff and clients responded in one voice: accessible bicycle repair and resources to keep everyone rolling.

THE QUESTION WAS ASKED.
Actively look for the person or people in crosswalks, roads, sidewalks, parks, and anywhere in and around the direction you are headed.

BIKE WALK WICHITA | A TIMELINE
2010
FORMATION OF BIKE WALK WICHITA.
Sparked by the absence of cycling voices in Wichita’s Downtown Master Plan, a core group of advocates began meeting to craft a shared vision for cycling in the city.
This grassroots effort laid the foundation for what would become Bike Walk Wichita.

2011
FIRST PUBLIC & MONTHLY MEETINGS
Early members met in borrowed spaces, such as CityArts and a wine store's basement.
Despite being nomadic, they held consistent monthly meetings that galvanized local support and began building community momentum for developing bicycle and pedestrian plans for the city of Wichita.

2013
OFFICIAL NONPROFIT STATUS & FIRST MASTER BICYCLE PLAN APPROVED.
Bike Walk Wichita became a 501(c)3 organization, solidifying its structure with a board, bylaws, and a strategic plan.
That same year, the City of Wichita unanimously approved its first Bicycle Master Plan, with Bike Walk Wichita playing a key advocacy role.

2014
FIRST MASTER PEDESTRIAN PALN APPROVED
The City of Wichita approved its first Pedestrian Master Plan, with Bike Walk Wichita once again playing a key advocacy role.

EARLY 2015
ReCYCLE IS BORN
Bike Walk Wichita launches ReCycle, built on a simple ideal: bicycle transportation and repairs should not be limited or hindered for any person.
Operating out of the back of a minivan, our volunteers would drive to shelters and service providers and offer no-cost repairs to those who needed them.

LATE 2015
AN OFFICIAL HOME AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
After years of rotating locations, Bike Walk Wichita moved into 131 S. Laura. Volunteers painted, laid rugs, and built workbenches.
This headquarters would become a central hub for advocacy, education, and outreach. Volunteer Kim Negrete (Neufield) stepped up to assume the role of Executive Director.

2018
NATIONAL RECOGNITION WITH PARK TOOL GRANT.
Bike Walk Wichita’s successful Park Tool grant application enabled the organization to become one of only 10 shops in the U.S. to receive specialized funding, helping to outfit and expand its community shop.
Fast forward to 2025, and The ReCycle Shop, a Project of Bike Walk Wichita, becomes designated as an official Park Tool School.

2020
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF IMPACT
Bike Walk Wichita celebrated its 10th anniversary with a renewed strategic plan, stronger social media presence, and increased visibility as a leader in regional active transportation efforts.
The continued success of Bike Walk Wichita’s ReCycle Program led to the need to search for a larger space to accommodate the expansion of the bike shop.

2021
WELCOME TO THE 325
A volunteer-turned-board member phoned a friend, and the rumor of a space in downtown that was perfect for us went from a dream to a reality.
Bike Walk Wichita and The ReCycle Shop found their new home and began the process of settling in.

2024
BIKE WALK APPOINTS A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.
In August 2024, Holly Terrill assumed the role of Bike Walk Wichita’s Executive Director, marking a new chapter focused on organizational sustainability and expanding the culture of safe walking and biking for everyone.

"
Instructors were fabulous! Gave clear instructions along with demonstrations that were easily understood and helped us repeat on our bikes how to do things.
I cannot say enough good things about the teachers and class!!

Whether you're commuting to work, chasing your kids on a trail, or leading change in your neighborhood, we're here to support you. Everyone reaches a better destination when our city moves with intention.
PARTICIPATE
Let's get you moving.
We don’t sit on the sidelines, and we don’t want you to either. Join a group ride, explore a new trail on foot, or help us build a bike-friendly future.
Every mile walked or ridden and every wrench turned counts.
ADVOCATE
People, policy, and Infrastructure.
From city council chambers to crosswalks, we raise our voices (and our handlebars) to champion infrastructure that works for everyone.
Safe streets shouldn't be a luxury.
COLLABORATE
How can you get involved
Change doesn't happen in a vacuum.
We intentionally team up with our volunteers, neighbors, nonprofits, and policymakers to create a Wichita that moves together.
EDUCATE
let's learn together.
Whether it's teaching kids how to ride or helping drivers understand pedestrian right-of-way, we believe knowledge is power, and sometimes power comes with reflectors and a helmet, or a cone wrench.
WHO WE ARE
BIKE JAMS & ON-SITE YOUTH EDUCATION
Our Bike Jam events provide bicycle safety education by giving kids a safe and secure place to practice riding and improve their bike handling skills by overcoming a range of challenges.
These fun events allow kids to learn how to be better cyclists, whether they are young sidewalk riders or are hitting the road to get places like school.
Our Bike Jams use specifically designed elements to teach bicycle handling, road safety, confidence in riding, the rules of the road, and can be transported to any location with enough outdoor space to safely set up the training course at different sizes.
Please reach out to us if you are interested in bringing one of our Bikes Jams to your organization or facility.
