CITY COUNCIL AND ADVISORY BOARDS

Here's a short list of places to enjoy Riding in Wichita.  Composed of over 144 parks and open spaces, the City of Wichita's PARK LOCATOR is a great tool to start your daily, weekly, or monthly walk.

SEDGWICK COUNTY CITY COUNCIL

The mission of the City Council is to provide policy direction for the City of Wichita in developing, implementing, and maintaining services to the citizens of Wichita. The Council establishes policy direction for the City by enacting ordinances, laws, and policies; adopting the budget; levying taxes; and appointing members to citizen advisory boards and commissions. The seven-member Council is elected to four-year terms on a nonpartisan basis with staggered terms of office. The Mayor and City Council Members can run two consecutive four-year terms. The Mayor's position is full-time, while Council Members are part-time. Salaries and election years vary from year to year. Six Council members are elected by district, and the Mayor is elected at-large.

The shop is open to any and all with only one true requirement: You must be willing to learn.

Bicycles, at their core are simple machines; learning how to repair them is fun, but is not without challenges.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN BOARD

Swanson Park, in northwest Wichita, is another natural oasis within the city limits. It has been designated as a Wichita Wild Habitat Area. The walking path is 1.2 miles long and takes about 22 minutes to complete. This is considered an easy route. This trail is also great for running, and it’s FREE to enjoy!

We do not require any type of pre-registration or formal sign-up.

The goal is to remove as many barriers to volunteering as possible and create a safe space for everyone to make a difference.

ARKANSAS RIVER PATH

This 10 mile multi use path goes through the heart of the city and provides access to parks and multiple city attractions, including museums, the stadium, and the zoo. There are plenty of places to park along the path as well as many quiet stretches to explore.

Please call during open shop hours.  While no sign-up is needed, we do operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

We can only train as many people as we have Coordinators (technically trained and experienced volunteers) on the floor.

SEDGWICK COUNTY PARK

This park has more than 4 miles of paths, including several that wind through wooded areas that might make you forget you are still in the city. Located in the northwest part of town right next to the zoo, this popular park can be reached from the ark river path. The best place to enter and park is on Ridge Road and 13th street.

While there are other volunteer options in the shop, the majority are bicycle repair-related. For first timers in the shop, you need to complete an orientation with one of our Volunteer Coordinators.

You will go through a checklist covering bicycle repair at your own pace to make sure you are comfortable in repairing bicycles.

The orientation takes about 1-to-2 hours, so please plan for that time.

REDBUD TRAIL

The Redbud trail is one of two growing rails-to-trails projects in the area. Starting near Central and Hydraulic and running almost to Augusta it is highlighted by beautiful nature

After your orientation, you are welcome to return at any time with no need for 1-on-1 support, and we will answer any questions you have as they come up.

Each volunteer hour equals $5 in-shop credit and can be used at any time once completed.

We can't wait to see you in the shop!

WATSON PARK

Popular lakefront park offers fishing, boating, 3 playgrounds, mini golf, kids' rides & concessions.

Those interested in progressing their skills and support in the shop may be eligible to become a Volunteer Coordinator.

Coordinators have completed 50 hours of volunteer time, exemplify the heart of the shop, can competently teach the checklist, and have a genuine love of supporting all others, regardless of their situation.

Coodinators care about bikes, but they care about people more.
